Over the years of my language learning, I was always told that one of the best ways was through music.
In fact, I’ve created a music playlist on Spotify that contains my French favorites!
As a teacher in a French Immersion classroom, a tradition has taken hold in my classrooms… Musical Period.
What is music period? It’s 30 minutes of collaborative work during which children can work in teams while singing their favorite French songs. Of course, a certain selection gets repeated day by day, but hearing the kids sing their happiness is worth it! So here are three must-have songs in my classroom.
Papaoutai – Stromae
First, at the top of the list, we inevitably have Stromae and his immeasurable hit Papaoutai. With its simple, but poignant lyrics, don’t be surprised if you hear your students singing this song in school!
Mama Africa from Kids United
Then, another classic in my French immersion class is the whole Kids United soundtrack, but especially Mama Africa. My students love this song so much that they have even learned the moves associated with it! So this is a great opportunity for your students to learn French and dance!
Deux langues from Radio Radio
Finally, what would be an immersion class be without the song Deux langues by the duo Radio Radio? This song is the result of the Teacher 5 étoiles Paroles d’Immersion contest. With its fiery rhythm and haunting lyrics, your students will love sharing the importance of speaking two languages with their loved ones!
What about you? What must-have song do you play over and over in your classroom to get your students fired up? Why not create your own song to show your love of French immersion in your classroom? A great end of year project!
